FRESNO, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team (15-13) lost to No. 23/18 Oregon State (21-7), 3-2, on Friday at the Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic. The Aztecs were trying for their second win over a ranked team in two days.
The Aztecs struck in the sixth when center fielder Janna Kovensky (San Diego, Calif.) lined a two-run homer over the left field fence, scoring left fielder Erin Mahoney (Westchester, Calif.), who led off the inning with a single to short right.
Oregon State quickly came back in the bottom of the sixth when shortstop Kelly Peterson hit a two-run homer to center. The Beavers took a 3-2 lead in the same inning on a double by catcher Lisa Allen that went to the right field fence and scored pinch runner Ashley Brown.
The Beavers threatened in the bottom of the third when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Mahoney made a running shoestring catch running toward the infield to end the threat.
In the top of the fourth, San Diego State loaded the bases loaded with one out, but Hoffman retired the next two Aztecs to stifle the rally.
San Diego State plays two games on Saturday, at 1 p.m. versus North Texas and at 7 p.m. against No. 1/1 UCLA. The Bruins and Aztecs played a terrific game last Saturday at the SDSU Tournament, with UCLA pulling out a 1-0, 10-inning win.
