SDSU's Chris Walton Leads Food Drive at Saturday's Hoops Game

March 5, 2004

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior Chris Walton is organizing a food drive before the Utah basketball game Sat., March 6, to collect food and raise money for the Special Delivery organization of San Diego.

Special Delivery is a charity that delivers food to local residents who are unable to care for themselves because of HIV/AIDS. In addition, a raffle will be taken to raise money for the organization. Some of the items in the raffle include autographed basketballs from Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and the Walton family.

"The food drive is a way to collect food as well as raise money for a good cause," said Walton. "We would appreciate all the support we can get from fans coming to our game as well as the high school playoff games at Cox Arena. We really appreciate all the support we will get from people around the city. It is a great cause and we can't do it with out their support."

This is the second year Walton has conducted a food drive for Special Delivery. Last year's drive was held during the SDSU-Arizona basketball game and Walton says it was a huge success.

"We ended up with half a U-Haul filled with canned food and toiletry items, which was a great start to the food drive," Walton said. "Hopefully, this year we can even top that for the people at Special Delivery."

Volunteers will be at Cox Arena beginning at noon, selling raffle tickets and collecting food.
