SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State Aztecs will face the University of Michigan for the first time ever and return to the Rose Bowl to face UCLA for the second straight season as part of its 2004 football schedule, announced Thursday.
The 2004 slate features five home games, including the first two weekends of the season when the Aztecs will host San Jose State (Sept. 4) and Nevada (Sept. 11). The Aztecs have not faced San Jose State since 1998 and the Aztecs and Nevada last met during the 1995 campaign.
The non-conference schedule is completed with road trips to Michigan on Sept. 18 and an Oct. 2 visit to the Rose Bowl to face UCLA. The Aztecs dropped a 20-10 decision to the Bruins last season. Michigan is coming off of a 10-3 season that included a Big Ten championship, a No. 6 final ranking by the Associated Press and an appearance in the Rose Bowl. The visit to Ann Arbor marks the second straight season in which the Aztecs will have faced the defending Big Ten champion on the road. Last season, SDSU dropped a 16-13 decision at No. 2 Ohio State.
San Diego State will open conference play Oct. 9 at Wyoming and then will return to Qualcomm Stadium for the first time in five weeks for the Mountain West home opener against Colorado State. The rest of the home schedule features defending Mountain West champion Utah on Oct. 30, and the season finale against UNLV on Nov. 20.
SDSU visits New Mexico Oct. 23, Brigham Young on Nov. 6 and Air Force on Nov. 13.
The Mountain West Conference will announce the league television schedule at a later date with the possibility existing that some games could be moved to accommodate a telecast.
