San Diego - San Diego State struck for six runs in the first inning and went on to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 8-5, Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. It was the Aztecs' best single-inning run total this year as they evened their record at 5-5. UCSB, which opened its season with a win over SDSU on Friday, fell to 1-1.
The Aztecs' first-inning rally began with a leadoff single by center fielder David Hall, who was sacrificed to second by Landon Burt. With two out, Jake McLintock and Brock Ungricht drew walks off Gaucho starter James Dayley (0-1) to load the bases. Designated hitter Josh Hill, making his first start of the year, then unloaded a triple to center field to clear the bases.
Hill, who finished the game with three hits (single, double, triple) and three RBI, scored on a single by the next batter, Chad Corona. An ensuing double by James Guerrero set the stage for a two-RBI single by second baseman Ryan Wilson to account for the fifth and six runs of the inning.
Wilson went 3-for-3 on the afternoon with a sacrifice fly and four runs batted in. Guerrero and Corona recorded two hits apiece as well. In addition, freshman Brock Ungricht had a double in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
SDSU starting pitcher Daryl Harang picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the year. He went 6.1 innings, allowing three runs, of which only two were of the earned variety. Senior Ryan Schroyer came on in the ninth, retiring the side in order to record his third save.
The Aztecs and Gauchos conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 8) beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
