SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team ran into a couple of outstanding pitching performances and dropped a pair of games to Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon, 2-1 and 1-0. The Aztecs drop to 10-9, while the Mustangs improve to 8-8.

In the first inning of game one, Cal Poly scored two runs off three hits in the first off Aztec starting pitcher Deanna Richards (Visalia, Calif.), which held up as the Mustangs defeated SDSU, 2-1.

The Aztecs got one back in the fourth. Center fielder Janna Kovensky (San Diego, Calif.) singled up the middle to start the rally. First baseman Kelcy Murphy (San Diego, Calif.) followed with a single and the two Rancho Bernardo High School grads then teamed up for a double steal. Second baseman Joann Figueroa (Phoenix, Ariz.) earned an RBI on a ground ball to second when the throw home failed to beat Kovensky to the plate.

The Aztecs left the bases loaded in the fifth and third baseman Meagan Hartung (San Diego, Calif.) hit a two-out double in the seventh, but Cal Poly held on for the 2-1 victory.

Cal Poly scored early in the second game, pushing across a single tally in the second inning. San Diego State had two excellent chances, their first in the first inning when Hartung attempted to score from second on a single to right field by Murphy, but was nailed by Mustang right fielder Chelsea Green.

In the Aztec sixth, Hartung doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Erin Mahoney (Westchester, Calif.). A deep fly ball to left field appeared to score Hartung with the tying run, but she was later called out on an appeal play to third for leaving the base too early on the fly ball.

Starting pitcher Cori Janelli's (Visalia, Calif.) pitched a four-hitter.

The Aztecs head south on 101 and play at UC Santa Barbara in a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
