AUSTIN, TEXAS - Taylor Teagarden's double to right field brought home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as Texas defeated San Diego State, 3-2, at Disch-Falk Field Saturday afternoon. The third-ranked Longhorns improved to 14-2 as they won their third straight game. SDSU, meanwhile, fell to 7-12 on the year as they lost for the fourth time in their last five outings.
The Aztecs scored first in the contest, breaking a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh courtesy of Landon Burt's two-run double. After Lance Zawadzki led off the inning with a double and Curt Mendoza walked, third baseman Ryan Wilson sacrificed then to third and second respectively to set the stage for Burt's RBI hit. Zawadzki's double was his second hit of the day as he was the lone Aztecs to reach safely more than once.
Texas came back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own on an RBI double by designated hitter J.D. Reininger and a run-scoring single by pinch hitter Hunter Harris.
From that point SDSU reliever Ryan Schroyer and Texas hurler J. Brent Cox battled over the next three innings before the Longhorns won it in the 10th. A one-out double down the left field line by UT catcher Curtis Thigpen preceded Teagarden's game-winning two-bagger.
Cox picked up the win for Texas to improve to 2-0 on the season while Schroyer saw his record drop to 1-2. The SDSU senior's 3.1 innings was his longest outing of the season.
The Aztecs got an excellent performance from starter Daryl Harang, who pitched into the seventh inning before being replaced by Schroyer. He kept the Longhorn hitters off balance much of the afternoon and allowed just one Texas runner to reach second base over the first six innings.
San Diego State and Texas conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon with game time set for 1:00 p.m. in Austin.
