AUSTIN, TEXAS - Third-ranked Texas broke open a scoreless contest with four runs in the fifth and tacked on two more in the sixth as it defeated San Diego State, 6-0, Friday afternoon at Disch-Falk Field in Austin. A trio of Longhorn hurlers limited the Aztecs to four hits as UT improved to 13-2 on the season. With the loss, SDSU saw its record fall to 7-11.
San Diego State starter Scott Shoemaker (1-4) tossed four innings of shutout ball before giving up the four runs in the fifth on five hits. The big blows in the inning were a solo home run by first baseman Curtis Thigpen and a two-run blast off the bat of second baseman Seth Johnston. Texas added two more in the next inning off Shoemaker on a two-out two-RBI single by left fielder Dooley Prince.
The Aztecs were unlucky not score when Rielly Embrey's one-out double to right center bounced over the fence forcing Jake McLintock, who had walked, to advance only as far as third. Reliever Kyle Yates then struck out Kyle Floquet and pinch hitter Josh Hill to get out of the jam.
Longhorn starting pitcher J.P. Howell, who transferred to Texas last season from USC, Went six innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight to improve to 2-1 on the year.
San Diego State and Texas continue their three-game series on Saturday at Disch-Falk Field with game time set for 2:00 p.m. (CST).
