SDSU Track and Field Leads After Day One Of The MWC Indoor Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The San Diego State women's track and field is in first place after day one of the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. Senior Leslie Miller (Humble, Texas) won the pentathlon, while teammates freshman Janine Polischuk (Regina, Saskatchewan) and sophomore Nicole Carmier (Elk Grove, Calif.) placed fifth and sixth respectively to give the Aztecs a meet-leading 17 points Thursday at the Air Force Academy's Cadet Field House.

Miller won the 60-meter hurdles and placed in the top three in each of the other four events to tally a career best and NCAA provisional point total of 3,858, which ranks ninth nationally entering this week. The All-American finished second a year ago, fifth in 2002 and eighth in 2000 as a freshman in the same event.

Polischuk recorded a fifth-place point total of 3,237 with the help of a fourth place in the 60-meter hurdles (9.17) and a fifth in the long jump (17-02.25). Carmier, who was eighth in the heptathlon at last year's conference outdoor meet, came in just behind Polischuk tallying 3,209 points. Carmier had the day's fastest time in the 800 meters, completing the race in 2:23.10, and was third in the high jump by clearing 5-03.00.

SDSU holds a six-point advantage over second place Colorado State (11 pts.) in the team competition, while four-time defending champion BYU is third (8 pts.) and is followed by Wyoming (2 pts.) and New Mexico (1 pt.).

The Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships continues Friday, beginning at 12:30 p.m. MST. Friday's finals include the weight throw, long jump, pole vault, 5,000 meters and distance medley relay.
