Box Score

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team recorded their 38th victory in 38 meetings with the San Diego Toreros on Wednesday night, 7-1. The Aztecs scored in five of the seven innings and, behind the solid pitching of Celena Velasquez (Tucson, Ariz.), improved their record to 10-7. The host Toreros fell to 4-8.

In the second, junior catcher Danielle Touhey (Fresno, Calif.) hit her first career triple with a liner down the right field line and into the corner. She scored on designated player Joann Figueroa's (Phoenix, Ariz.) single to left field. Figueroa singled in the fourth to score second baseman Brittany Green (San Clemente, Calif.).

Right fielder Bree Boyer (Huntington Beach, Calif.) got the fifth inning going with hustle, reaching first on an error from a rushed pitcher, albeit while losing one of her shoes in the close play at first. Later in the inning, she would prove once again to be too fast for her shoes, losing one between third and home on the way to scoring on a Green single and giving San Diego State a 3-0 lead.

The Aztecs responded to a single USD tally in the bottom of the fifth with three of their own in the sixth. Center fielder Janna Kovensky (San Diego, Calif.) got the rally going with a double down the left field line. Right fielder Kelcy Murphy (San Diego, Calif.) singled her in and Boyer singled Murphy home. Boyer scored SDSU's third run of the inning off a Torero error.

Murphy drove in Kovensky in the seventh with a single to left field for the final Aztec run of the night.

Kovensky went 3-for-4 with a double against the Toreros while Figueroa, Murphy and Green contributed two hits each. Velasquez threw a five-hitter and improved her record to 5-2.

The Aztecs hit the road again this weekend, playing two noon doubleheaders: at Cal Poly on Saturday and at UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. Friday's originally scheduled game with Cal State Northridge has been cancelled due to construction at Matador Diamond.
