SAN DIEGO -- The 52nd-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team won three three-set singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over 10th-ranked Division II-power UC San Diego on Tuesday afternoon at the SDSU Courts.
The Aztecs, which improve to 2-2 on the season, will look to claim the city championship on Saturday afternoon when they play at San Diego. The Tritons fall to 3-2 on the season.
UC San Diego claimed the doubles point with victories at number one and two. The Division II third-ranked team of Jeff Wilson and Sameer Chopra rallied from a break down to claim a 9-8 victory over 30th-ranked Ryan Redondo and Felix Hardt, 9-8. That clinched the point for the Tritons after Amir Nejad and Bryan Swatt recorded an 8-5 win at number two doubles.
The Aztecs took the lead for good with a pair of straight-set victories in singles play. At number four, Markus Dickhardt was victorious, 6-1, 6-2, over 39th-ranked Emil Novak of UCSD. Daniel Jung was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at number three singles over Wilson.
The Aztecs clinched the match with a pair of three-set victories. At number six singles, Dontia Hayes defeated Nejad, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, while at number one singles 49th-ranked Hardt disposed of the 25th-ranked player in Division II, Chopra, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
The Tritons received their only singles victory from 17th-ranked Bryan Swatt. The 17th-ranked player upended San Diego State's Redondo, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. The Aztecs Michael Coehlo closed out the match with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 victory at number five.
