Aztecs Look To Secure First MWC Indoor Title Starting Thursday
* The SDSU track and field squad will send 22 of its members to the 2004 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships, slated for Feb. 26-28, in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Aztec contingent is the school's largest ever at the MWC indoor meet, which will take place at the Air Force Academy's Cadet Field House for the fifth straight year.

* This week's meet schedule begins with the pentathlon on Thursday, which will include three Aztecs in senior Leslie Miller (Humble, Texas), sophomore Nicole Carmier (Elk Grove, Calif.) and freshman Janine Polischuk (Regina, Sask.). On Friday, the finals of the weight throw, long jump, pole vault, 5,000 meters and distance medley relay will be contested, while the majority of the finals will take place on Saturday. Competition begins at 11 a.m. (MST) Thursday and 12:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

* SDSU had its best showing ever at the MWC indoor meet a year ago, placing second behind four-time team champion BYU, with 119 total points.

The runner-up finish is four spots better than the Aztecs' performance in 2002, when they took sixth with 58.50 points. In 2001, SDSU sent just one student-athlete to the championships (8th - 8 pts.), while the team was third (89 pts.) at the inaugural meet in 2000.

* SDSU's Tonette Dyer (Shreveport, La.) and Nicole Ireland (Las Vegas, Nev.) return to defend their 2003 individual titles in the 60 and 200 meters, respectively.

* Other misc. notes - Unless they qualify for the NCAAs, this week's meet will be the last in an Aztec uniform for standouts Kylie Edwards (Mt. Dundeed, Australia), Leslie Miller and Melinda Smedley (Stockton, Calif.) ... Tonette Dyer has the 17th-fastest time in the 200 (23.75) and the 23rd best in the 400 (53.96) according to trackshark.com ... BYU is ranked 11th nationally in the Feb. 24 Trackwire poll ... The Cadet Field House features a 268-meter (6 laps/mile) polyurethane surface with eight lanes on the straightaway and six lanes on the oval ... Colorado Springs sits at an altitude of 6,007 feet, the second time the Aztecs have competed in a meet at 6,000-feet and above this season.
