POWAY, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team (8-5) defeated Iowa State (1-6), 4-0, at the Campbell/Cartier Classic at the Sportsplex USA in Poway, Calif., on Friday night. Pitcher Cori Janelli (Visalia, Calif.) threw a two-hit shutout and senior second baseman Joann Figueroa (Phoenix, Ariz.) hit her first career home run in the Aztec win.
The Aztecs got the scoring going early with a two-run first and added to their lead with single tallies in the fourth and sixth. An RBI single by first baseman Lacey Craft (Valley Center, Calif.) scored shortstop Bianca Cruz (Glendale, Ariz.) with the fourth-inning run.
In the sixth, Figueroa drove the ball over the right-center field fence for her first career home run and the final tally of the 4-0 win.
Center fielder Janna Kovensky (San Diego, Calif.) went 2-for-3 to lead the Aztecs in hits.
The Aztecs play No. t4/5 Washington tonight.
