THIS WEEK
* San Diego State makes the first of three consecutive weekend road trips when it travels to northern California to face Santa Clara in a three-game series.
* Game one is set for Friday evening (Feb. 13) at 6:00 p.m. at Santa Clara's Buck Shaw Stadium. The series continues with games on Saturday (Feb. 14) and Sunday (Feb. 15), both at 1:00 p.m.
* This is the 66th season of Aztec baseball since the sport was elevated to major status in 1936. The school did not field varsity teams from 1943 to 1945.

SERIES RECORD
* San Diego State's all-time record against Santa Clara stands at 3-6. The teams first met during the 1957 season with SDSU losing the first five meetings between that year and 1974.
* The Aztecs' first win over the Broncos came during the 1974 season in the third game of a three-game series in Santa Clara.
* The teams had not faced each other since that contest until last season when the Broncos visited Tony Gwynn Stadium for three games, with SDSU taking two of the three.

SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
* Santa Clara is off to a 3-2 start this season after winning two of three at UC Riverside to open the year, and then splitting a pair of contests with Brigham Young at home earlier this week.
* The Broncos' top hitters in the early going have been infielders Dustin Realini (.500, 2 doubles, 8 RBI) and Michael Thompson (.353. 4 RBI) along with outfielder Nic Crosta (.471, 2 HR, 7 RBI). Santa Clara is hitting .330 as a team after its first five contests.
* On the mound, Chad Fillinger has made a pair of starts and is 1-0 with a 2.25 earned run average. He has struck out 12 in eight innings. Relievers Anthony Rea (1-0, 3.18) and Kellan McConnell (0-1, 3.00) have recorded a save apiece. The team ERA stands at 5.93.
* The Santa Clara roster contains a pair of pitchers from San Diego County: Scott Lonergan (Poway HS) and Scott Shapiro (St. Augustine HS). Lonergan has one of the Bronco's three wins this season, a victory in relief over UC Riverside.

HEAD COACH Tony Gwynn
* Tony Gwynn enters his second season as San Diego State's head coach after being named to the position in Sept. 2001.
* In 2002, he served as a volunteer coach for the Aztecs under Jim Dietz, who retired at the end of that season. * A former Aztec who played baseball at San Diego state from 1979 to 1981, Gwynn concluded a 20-year major league career with the San Diego Padres in 2001. With a career batting average of .338, he won eight National League batting titles, five Gold Gloves, and made 15 appearances in the annual All-Star Game.
