Swimmers Win Individual Sprint Meet At UCI Invitational

Irvine, Calif. - San Diego State took five of the top 12 places in the final event to edge host UC Irvine and win the Sprint portion of the three-part UCI/Country Inn & Suites Invitational Saturday afternoon in Irvine. The Aztecs finished the meet with 398 points with the Anteaters taking second in the seven-team meet with 384 points.

Earlier in the day, UCI won the Distance Meet with 239 points with SDSU taking third (118 points). Seven teams competed in each of the two meets. Senior Megan Storey had six top 10 finishes on the day with four in the sprints and two in the distance events.

In the final event of the sprint meet, the 100 freestyle, San Diego State was paced by a sixth-place finish from Adriana Quirke (54.72). She was followed by teammates Caitlin Friedhoff (7th-45.96), Emily Schmied (8th-54.96), Stella Karoly (11th-55.47) and Hannah Ryan (12th-55.49). A total of 83 swimmers competed in that final race.

Ryan and Schmied got SDSU off to a fast start by finishing second and third respectively (out of 84 entrants) in the opening event, the 200 freestyle. Ryan went 1:55.44 with Schmied turning in a 1:56.18. Fellow Aztec Adrian Quirke added a fifth-place finish in 1:57.35.

The Aztecs got top five finishes in several events on the afternoon. Senior Megan Storey took second (of 33) in the 200 butterfly (2:09.48) while Friedhoff was third (of 65) in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.01. Karoly was fifth (of 43 competitors) in the 200 individual medley.

Other top five placing came from Schmied in the 100 butterfly (3rd-59.96), Jennifer Arrow in the 200 breaststroke (4th-2:27.68) and Storey in the 200 backstroke (4th-2:11.09).

In the distance event portion of the meet held Saturday morning, San Diego State turned in a total of eight top 10 finishes in the four races. The Aztecs began with a fourth-place result from Schmied in the 1,000 freestyle (10:34.37).

In the 400 individual medley, Aztec swimmers finished eighth (Karoly - 4:41.86), ninth (Storey - 4:42.37) and 10th (Sarah Davis - 4:43.15). In the 500 free, Ryan led the Aztecs with a third-place finish (5:07.94) while Schmied took sixth with a mark of 5:11.70). The final distance event saw Storey take third (17:27.05) and Ryan eighth (17:58.91).

San Diego State concludes its stay in Irvine on Sunday as it competes in the relay portion of the UCI Invitational beginning at 10:00 a.m.
