SAN DIEGO (AP) - Freshman Brandon Heath had 18 of his 24 points in the second half and Wesley Stokes added 17 to lead San Diego State to an 86-76 win over Iowa State on Saturday night.
Heath shot 6-for-8 from the field in the second half and helped the Aztecs gain some breathing room with a 19-6 run that put them up by 12 points with just less than six minutes left.
San Diego State (9-5) used a pressuring defense to go from a 44-43 deficit at the 14:40 mark to a 62-50 lead with 5:45 left in the game.
Stokes had steals on two consecutive possessions that lead to a pair of fastbreak baskets to start the run. Aerick Sanders scored six points in the run, and Heath, who also hit a 3-pointer, capped the run with a steal and lay-up.
Freshman Curtis Stinson scored a career-high 27 points for Iowa State (7-2), which lost its second straight game.
Stinson was 12-of-18 from the field and scored nine points in a two-minute stretch to pull the Cyclones to within 74-69 with 2:35 remaining.
But San Diego State was 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 1:16 to secure the win.
Stokes had eight assists and Sanders finished with 17 points. Chris Walton scored a career-high 14 points for San Diego State, which shot 60.7 percent from the field in the second half.
Jake Sullivan added 15 points for Iowa State, which lost despite holding a 39-28 rebounding edge.
The Aztecs trailed 33-32 at halftime despite falling behind 15-4 just more than five minutes into the game.
