This Week
San Diego State heads north for its final scheduled dual meet of the season to take on Cal Poly on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1:00 p.m. in San Luis Obispo. The Aztecs defeated the Mustangs last season by a score of 158-81.

Coaching Staff
San Diego State head coach Deena Schmidt is in her 10th season as head coach of the Aztec swimming and diving program. The former Olympian, who won a gold as a member of the 400-medley relay team at the 1972 Olympics, is a 1988 graduate of San Diego State. Schmidt is assisted by Greg Hutt, also in his 10th season. Jim Wynne is in his second season as the Aztec diving coach. In addition, former Aztec all-conference swimmer Erin Kilpatrick will serve as a student assistant coach.

Last Time Out
San Diego State traveled to Los Angeles and recorded a pair of dual meet victories last weekend. On Friday (Jan. 23) the Aztecs defeated Loyola Marymount, 140.5-65.5, at LMU's Burns Aquatic Center. The next day, SDSU moved up the coast to Malibu where it recorded a 196-104 win at Pepperdine. The two wins improved the Aztecs season record in dual meets to 7-5 as they surpassed their victory total of last season when they finished 6-8.

Karoly Has Big Weekend
Freshman Stella Karoly has an excellent weekend during the meets at Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine. In Friday's meet against LMU, she began by swimming the third leg on the winning 200 medley relay team, then added first-place finishes in both the 100 butterfly (58.55) and 200 individual medley (2:09.80). Both times represented season bests with her time in the 100 fly ranking as the team's best this season. At Pepperdine, she swam the third leg on the first-place 400-medley relay team, then finished first in the 400 individual medley (4:36.42), second in the 100 free (53.99) and third in the 200 fly (2:09.01). Again all three individual event times were personal bests.

Parker, Ryan Record Top Five Times
Senior Hannah Ryan and freshman Emily Parker each had times in the 1,000 freestyle this past weekend that cracked the top five all-time best Aztec marks. On Friday, Parker turned in a mark of 10:27.55, the fourth-best in SDSU history. The next day, Ryan went 10:21.88 to record the third-best time in the event for an Aztec swimmer. The pair traded wins in the distance freestyle events last weekend, with Parker winning the 1,000 free and Ryan the 500 free (5:08.28) at LMU, then Parker taking the 500 free (5:06.31) and Ryan the 1,000 free at Pepperdine.

Friedhoff Sweeps Free Sprint Events
Freshman Caitlin Friedhoff continued to shine in her primary events, the 50 and 100 freestyle races. She won both events at each of last weekend's two meets. At LMU, she went 25.02 in the 50 and 53.99 in the 100. On Saturday at Pepperdine, she improved her times in each of those races, swimming a 25.00 in the 50 and 53.76 in the 100. In the Aztecs' dual meets this season (a total of nine, with three being double duals), she has finished first in the 50 free seven times and first in the 100 free on four occasions. She has swept those two events in four dual competitions.

Karacozoff Wins Twice
Senior Jill Karacozoff recorded her season-best times in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke at last Saturday's meet at Pepperdine, taking first place in both events in the process. She swam a 1:07.55 in the 100 and a 2:24.56 in the 200.

Minnich Sets Personal Best
Sophomore diver Lindsey Minnich set a personal best in the one-meter event for the second straight meet with a score of 233.35 points. Her previous high point total came in the Aztecs' previous meet in Hawai'i, when she compiled a score of 216.15.
