Kona, Hawai'i - San Diego State staged a late rally with a pair of runs in the eighth to tie, then scored four times in the 10th to defeat Hawai'i-Hilo, 6-2, Sunday afternoon at Simmons Field in Kona. By taking the fifth game of the rain-shortened series, the Aztecs return home with a record of 3-2 while the Vulcans find themselves 4-8 on the year.
UHH opened the scoring in the second, getting a pair of unearned runs on a walk, hit batter, an Aztec error, and an RBI single by centerfielder Kaliko Oligo.
The Aztecs tried to come back in the next inning, getting leadoff walks to Garrett Changnon and David Hall. But a 6-4-3 double play and a ground out to shortstop ended the threat.
Vulcan Starting pitcher John Matson held San Diego State hitless over the first 5.1 innings before Aztec catcher Jordan Swaydan singled through the right side. Matson went seven innings, allowing just two hits while walking five and striking out two.
The Aztecs finally broke through in the eighth, tying the contest at 2-2 with a pair of runs off UHH relievers Mark Caviglia and Jason Miyahira. David Hall's base hit was followed by a two-out RBI single off the bat of Jordan Swaydan, who took second when the throw to the plate got by the Vulcan catcher Chris Savio. Swaydan then scored on Jake McLintock's single to right.
In the bottom of the inning, the Vulcan's put a man on second with one out, but closer Ryan Schroyer came on to get a groundout and strikeout to retire the side. The senior right-hander went on to pitch the final 2.2 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out two to record his first win of the year.
The Aztec won the contest with four runs in the 10th off Clay Daugherty (0-2), who had entered the game to start the ninth. With one out, James Guerrero drew a walk and went to second on a single by Jordan Swaydan, his third hit of the afternoon. Jake McLintock then singled through the left side to bring home the go-ahead run. Curt Mendoza then capped off the inning with a three-run homer to right to provide the final margin.
Up next for the Aztecs is their home opener against Sacramento State on Friday (Jan. 30) at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The three-game series with the Hornets will continue with games next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
