Aztecs Defeat Alumni, 6-1, in Annual Baseball Contest

Jan. 17, 2004

San Diego - The San Diego State Aztecs broke open a tight game with three runs in the seventh and went on to defeat the Alumni, 6-1, at Tony Gwynn Stadium Friday night. A crowd of well over 300 fans got their first look at the 2004 SDSU squad in a game that was dominated by Aztec pitching.

The game was scoreless over the first three innings as the starting hurlers allowed just three hits between them. For the alums, coached by former Aztec mentor Jim Dietz, Vic Martin (1979-81) struck out three Aztecs over his two innings of work. Meanwhile, SDSU's Drew Jenson was impressive over the first five frames, allowing just one hit and striking out eight.

The Aztecs got on the board in the fourth with three runs off Alumni reliever Erick Eigenhuis. Triples by Jordan Swaydan and Garrett Changnon sandwiched around accounted for two RBI with the third run scoring on a fielding error. Changnon was the lone player with multiple hits on the night after doubling in the second inning.

The Alumni answered back in the sixth, scoring a run in typical Jim Dietz fashion. After a leadoff single by Andy Litteral, Dietz had Marcos Mendoza sacrifice him to second. Ben Julianel then followed with a double to bring home the run.

The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the seventh when the Aztecs scored three times to put the game away. The big hit in the inning was a two-out two RBI single by second baseman Chad Williams.

SDSU closer Ryan Schroyer closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning, striking out two along the way.

San Diego State opens its 2004 season with a six-game series at Hawaii-Hilo starting Friday, Jan. 23. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 30, against Sacramento State at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
