SAN DIEGO - San Diego State all-Mountain West Conference offensive lineman Brendan Darby is headed to Hawaii next week to participate in the Hula Bowl.
Darby will depart for his Maui destination on Monday with the game scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17th at 5 p.m. (Pacific). The contest will be televised live by ESPN. The Hula Bowl is one of the premier postseason all-star games for college seniors.
"I'm looking forward to the trip and to the competition," said Darby. "It's a great opportunity to meet and compete with some of the best players in the country."
Darby, a product of Redwood High School in Tiburon, was a first-team all-Mountain West selection in 2003 after earning honorable mention all-league honors as a junior. He started the final 37 games of his career and made 42 career starts overall.
He becomes the 20th Aztec to play in the Hula Bowl. Last season, SDSU was represented in the game by defensive back Ricky Sharpe and receiver Kassim Osgood. The first Aztec to play in the Hula Bowl was Fred Dryer in 1969. Osgood and former Aztecs David Turner (1977) and Jim Sandusky (1983) were Hula Bowl Most Valuable Players.
Darby will play for the "Aina" squad, coached by Ohio State boss Jim Tressel.
