SAN DIEGO - The 2004 San Diego State track and field season officially gets underway for five Aztec pole vaulters this week, when they travel to Reno, Nev., Jan. 9-10, for the Pole Vault Summit, sponsored by UCS Spirit and USA Track and Field.

SDSU's Erin Asay (San Diego, Calif.), Shayla Balentine (Los Osos, Calif.), Julie Hudlow (San Diego, Calif.), Shanon Meyer (Hesperia, Calif.) and Cara Walker (Huntington Beach, Calif.) will be among nearly 1,000 pole vaulters in attendance at the annual event, which includes a seminar on Friday and the competition on Saturday. The summit will take place at the Reno Hilton.

A year ago, Meyer finished 10th in the college women's division, vaulting 10-0 in her first collegiate meet. Balentine also participated in 2003, but finished with a no-height in the top women's collegiate division. As a freshman in 2002, Balentine was seventh in the same competition.

The rest of the Aztec women's track and field team will open its season at the Mountain T's Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz., Saturday, Feb. 7.
