This Week
San Diego State heads north to compete in the UCI/Country Inn and Suites Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 3-4) at UC Irvine. The two-day event is broken down into three separate scored meets. On Saturday, the teams will compete in the Sprints Meet and the Distance Meet in the morning and afternoon respectively. On Sunday, the Invitational concludes with the Relay Meet. In addition to the Aztecs, participating teams include UC Irvine, Cal Poly SLO, Cal State Northridge, Pepperdine, Nebraska, New Mexico State, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Occidental. Last year, SDSU finished second of eight in the Sprint Meet, fourth of 11 in the Distance meet, and third of seven in the Relay Meet.
Coaching Staff
San Diego State head coach Deena Schmidt is in her 10th season as head coach of the Aztec swimming and diving program. The former Olympian, who won a gold as a member of the 400-medley relay team at the 1972 Olympics, is a 1988 graduate of San Diego State. Schmidt is assisted by Greg Hutt, also in his 10th season. Jim Wynne is in his second season as the Aztec diving coach. In addition, former Aztec all-conference swimmer Erin Kilpatrick will serve as a student assistant coach.
Last Time Out
San Diego State evened its season record at 4-4 with a 165-123 victory over Northern Arizona at the Kroc Community Center on Dec. 13. SDSU jumped out to an early lead as it won the first four events of the day. The foursome of Adriana Quirke, Jennifer Graham, Emily Schmied and Caitlin Friedhoff won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:50 .72 to get things started for the Aztecs. Megan Storey then took top honors in the 1,000 freestyle (10:20.97) and was followed by SDSU first-place finishes by Hannah Ryan in the 200 freestyle (1:52.34) and Quirke in the 100 backstroke (1:00.16).
Ryan Takes Two
For the second meet in a row, senior Hannah Ryan won two events in dual competition with victories in both the 200 free (1:52.34) and 500 free (5:02.45) against Northern Arizona on Dec. 13. She also took second in the 50 free with a time of 25.03 and led off the 400 free relay team that turned in a team season best mark of 3:34.80.
The Storey Continues
Megan Storey was the Aztecs' other double winner in its meet vs. Northern Arizona three weeks ago. The senior from Edmonds, Wash., began her day with a victory in the 1,000 free (10:20.97) and added a win in the 200 butterfly (1:07.33) four events later. She demonstrated her versatility by also turning in a fourth-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:12.88).
Meet Notes
The Aztecs swept one event vs. Northern Arizona as Storey, Emily Schmied and Stella Karoly finished 1-2-3 in the 200 butterfly...All three SDSU swimmers in the 400 individual medley set personal Aztec career best times: Schmied (4:33.32), Karoly (4:39.22) and Sarah Davis (4:41.04)... Schmied concluded the meet with three second-place individual finishes: 200 fly (2:09.65), 100 fly (59.50) and 400 IM (4:33.32).
Top Five Times
San Diego State swimmers have turned in four times this season that rank among the all-time top-five best times in Aztec history. Two of those marks have been recorded by senior Hannah Ryan, who has a 4:59.41 in the 500 free (fourth-best ever) and a 17:31.69 in the 1,650 free (fifth-best). Sophomore Emily Schmied has a time of 4:33.32 in the 400 individual medley, the second fastest in program history. In addition, freshman Sarah Davis went 2:08.63 in the 200 backstroke, the fifth-best ever for an Aztec individual.
Aztecs Among MWC Top 10s
SDSU senior Megan Storey ranks among the top eight individuals in the Mountain West Conference in four events (500, 1000 and 1650 free plus the 200 fly) while teammate Hannah Ryan has the second-best time in the league this season in 500 freestyle, third fastest in the 200 free, and fourth-best in the 1,650 free. Sophomore Emily Schmied has times ranked fourth in the 400 IM and ninth in the 200 fly. Others with top 10 times in the MWC this fall include Jennifer Graham (6th-100 breast), Jennifer Arrow (7th-200 breast), Stella Karoly (8th-100 fly) and Adriana Quirke (10th-100 back).
MWC Improvement
With their win over Air Force on the road on Dec. 6, the Aztecs improved their Mountain West Conference record to 3-4. SDSU has concluded its 2003-04 conference schedule and has improved its MWC win total over last year when it finished 1-6. It's conference victories this season came over New Mexico, Wyoming and Air Force.
Conference Standings
San Diego State was picked to finish seventh in the Mountain West Conference this season by a poll of the league's coaches. The Aztecs were seventh in last year's final conference standings and finished eighth at the 2003-04 MWC Championship meet. SDSU is currently 3-4 in conference dual meets this season and is the only team to have completed its league dual meet schedule. Entering the week, the MWC standings are as follows:

Looking Ahead
The Aztecs will resume dual meet action when they travel to Honolulu for a meeting with the University of Hawai'i on Friday, Jan. 9 at 6:00 p.m. (HST).
