Aztecs Open Critical Three-Game Homestand on Saturday; Look to Earn Split with Pac-10 Opponents In First Meeting With Washington

San Diego State (7-4) opens its longest homestand of the season by playing its second consecutive Pac-10 Conference opponent on Saturday night, plays host to Washington. The first basketball meeting between the school is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. PST start and the game will be televised locally in the San Diego market on Channel 4 San Diego (no satellite coverage) and can be heard on XPRS-1090 AM (The Mighty 1090).

San Diego State is coming off its fourth loss of the season, an 83-71 setback at fifth-ranked Arizona last Saturday. The current Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, senior forward Aerick Sanders tied a career-high with 24 points and nine rebounds against the Wildcats.

The 12-point margin of defeat was the largest for the Aztecs this season and the four opponents (23rd-ranked Dayton, Troy State, Texas Tech and fifth-ranked Arizona) that have defeated SDSU are a combined 29-6. San Diego State has responded from its last five defeats with a victory, including all three this season.

The game against the Huskies marks the first of a three-game homestand against teams that are a combined 15-8. In fact, the remaining 18 games on San Diego State's schedule are against teams all have a record of .500 or better.

San Diego State enjoyed another good week in the RPI. Through Thursday's games, the Aztecs were a season-best 73rd in the rankings, having played the 54th most difficult schedule to date.

Washington (3-3) has played just once since Dec. 6, a 79-64 loss at Houston last Saturday. The Huskies are led by Brandon Roy, who became the first player in school history to lead Washington in five statistical categories in the same game when he posted 19 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, two steals and one blocked shot in the game at Houston. For the season, he leads the Huskies in scoring (15.0), rebounding (5.7) and assists (3.5). This is the third consecutive road game for the Huskies, which have not played at home since Dec. 3.

This is the first meeting between Washington and San Diego State although Steve Fisher has faced the Huskies twice. Fisher is 1-1 against Washington, losing 65-61 on Dec. 30, 1994 in the finals of the US West Cellular Air Time in Seattle before claiming a 60-59 on Dec. 16, 1995 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

San Diego State is in a stretch of playing seven of nine games at home, including five of the next six contests. The Aztecs play just one road game (at Arizona last Saturday) in a 24-day span between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5.
