SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State crew team sent six boats to compete at the final regatta of the fall season, the San Diego Fall Classic at Mission Beach. The novice four boat finished first, while the three SDSU eight boats finished 1st, 2nd and 6th in the open eight and the two novice eight boats finished 1st and 5th.
SDSU's time of 28:57 in the 3.5-mile course gave the novice four boat 1st place of three, beating out UC Santa Barbara (31:33) and ZLAC (32:31). The race was also coxswain Aileen Gonzales' first race.
"(Aileen) was very excited," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "She steered a competitive course with many turns, including around an island, by taking tight turns at appropriate times. She also motivated her athletes to successful finishes."
The novice eight boats finished 1st (22:45) and 5th (24:24). Loyola Marymount (24:18), San Diego (24:21) and UC San Diego (24:23) finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively.
"I'm thrilled with the novice team's placement and showing," Zebroski said. "Their success and enthusiasm will take them through the off-season and into the competitive spring season."
The three varsity boats finished in 1st (22:27), 2nd (22:44) and 6th (24:27) in the open eight race.
"I'm pleased with the varsity team's intensity and dedication during the race and the fall season," Zebroski said. "We are looking to go into the off-season with some competitive spirit and to make large strides in the off-season."
The team will now take time off of racing until scrimmages against Orange Coast College on Feb. 21 and the alumni on Feb. 28.
