SDSU Softball Tops Alumni, 3-0, Saturday Morning

Nov. 8, 2003

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team hosted a team of 17 alumni Saturday morning before giving the 2002 and 2003 team members their Mountain West Conference championship rings. The varsity team topped the alumni, 3-1, behind the pitching performances of Deanna Richards, Cori Janelli and Celena Velasquez. The alumni didn't receive their first hit until, with two outs in the seventh inning, Kellie Labor lined a base hit. At one point, the SDSU pitching staff retired 14 straight alumni.

The varsity scored all three of their runs in the third inning. Jacque Vaca had the big hit of the inning, with a single scoring Erin Mahoney and Meagan Hartung. A subsequent single by Joann Figueroa drove in Kelcy Murphy.

Following the game, the 2002 and 2003 teams received their Mountain West Conference championship rings. The teams were the first two in SDSU history to win a conference's regular season championship.

Also, lone 2003 senior Amber Grahlman received a collage of photos from her playing days at SDSU and Jennifer Funk was named the 2003 team's Otontin Award winner. The Otontin Award is given weekly to the player who displayed characteristics of the Otontins: fierceness, being part of an elite warrior unit with an extreme order and discipline and being the bravest of the brave. At the end of the year, all the weekly point totals are added up and the player receiving the most is named the yearly winner.
