SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Despite out-shooting its opponent, 12-4, San Diego State (7-10-2) fell to UNLV (9-9-2), 2-1, in a Mountain West Conference Quarterfinal game Wednesday evening. The game was played in front of a snowy white Wasatch Mountain Range and under the bright lights and snow-covered seats of Rice-Eccles Stadium, home of the 2002 Winter Olympics and the University of Utah football team.
UNLV got on the scoreboard first at the 7:08 mark when a pass from midfielder Angie Inzana went to an open midfielder Erin Egertson at the top of the box, who flicked it over Aztec goalkeeper Stephanie Pearson and into the upper right portion of the net. That would be the Rebels' lone shot of the half.
At the 14:33 mark, a shot from defender Annette Shinn got past Rebel goalkeeper Jenna Huff, but missed the left goalpost by about five yards.
At the 18:11 mark, San Diego State turned on their offensive attack with emphasis. First, defender Erica Lopez passed the ball from the right sideline to the middle of the box to midfielder Amanda McKay, but her shut went high. At the 23:25 mark, another high pass from Lopez went through the box but did not find a teammate. At 25:04, forward Becky Prilaman's shot from the top of the box went just high. And then 41 seconds later, Shinn had a shot from 10 yards out blocked.
At the half, SDSU out-shot UNLV, 6-1.
UNLV almost added to their lead when a shot by forward Tanya Roberts at the 55:26 hit the left crossbar and was cleared by the Aztecs.
At the 58:20 mark, a free kick from 40 yards from Aztec defender Shannon McBride found the head of forward Lisette Martinez, but the header went wide right of the goal.
A corner kick by Prilaman at the 61:17 mark found the head of defender Amanda Swiader but the ball went off the post.
The Rebels took a 2-0 lead on only their third shot of the game at the 66:12 mark when defender Tania Lee scored with a shot from 12 yards. The assist went to forward Annie Magliulo.
The Aztecs turned up their offensive intensity to another level following that goal and drew to within one when a corner kick by Prilaman at 72:23 found midfielder Jessica Korpela who tucked it into the right side of the net. The goal was the first of the season for the transfer from San Jose State.
At 73:24, a shot by Huppert was saved by Huff. A shot from 20 yards by midfielder Jen Klunder at 85:39 went to the left of the goal. That would be the final shot for either team.
A free kick from McBride with six seconds left went into the box, but Huff caught it.
The Aztecs were without the services forward Kim Castellanos. She was suffering from post-concussion syndrome.
The game ends the 2003 season for the San Diego State Aztecs.
