SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - San Diego State women's soccer defenders Alexis Solovij and Amanda Swiader were named all-Mountain West Conference at the annual MWC banquet Tuesday night. Solovij was named to the first team, while Swiader earned second team honors.
Solovij and Swiader, both sophomores, combined to lead the outstanding SDSU defense throughout the season, helping the Aztecs earn seven shutouts, their most in a season since 1999. The Aztec defense also held opponents scoreless for a span of 299:54 over five games late in the season.
"Both Alexis and Amanda have been solid in back all year and it was nice to see the other (MWC) coaches recognize that," head coach Chuck Clegg said. All-MWC teams are voted on by league coaches, but coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players
"Amanda is good at intercepting and denying passes, while Alexis, as our sweeper, is excellent at cleaning up mistakes," Clegg added.
Offensively, Solovij has recorded five shots on the season, while Swiader has 17. Swiader also scored a goal and earned an assist against Colorado College on Oct. 10.
Both Solovij and Swiader have started in 17 Aztec games and played in all 18.
The Aztecs face UNLV in a MWC Quarterfinal at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah, at 2 p.m. MST on Wednesday. Live stats for every MWC Tournament game can be accessed at www.themwc.com/champ/soccer-today_03-mwc.html.
