Volleyball Falls To BYU In Regular-Season Finale

Nov. 15, 2003

SAN DIEGO - For the San Diego Statevoleyball team, the Saturday night began as a celebration as the Aztecs said farewell to seven seniors playing their final regular-season contest in Peterson Gym. But Brigham Young spoiled the party by defeating SDSU, 3-0 (30-25, 30-21, 30-26) Saturday evening in San Diego.

With the loss, the Aztecs' record falls to 17-13 as they fall to 7-7 in the Mountain West Conference. The Cougars improved to 19-7 on the season and finish 12-2 in league play.

BYU's hitting and blocking were too much for the Aztecs as the visitors got 16 kills and a .419 attack percentage from Lexi Brown plus 10 kills from Kimberly Wilson. Brigham Young controlled the offensive tempo, hitting .348 for the match compared to just .151 for SDSU.

San Diego State was led by Megan Schauermann with 11 kills and a .318 attack average. Junior Kara Moriarty contributed 11 digs. Schauermann also had five locks including three block assists, leaving her eight shy of tying the SDSU record for block assists in a season. However, as a team, the Aztecs were out-blocked 14-9 over the three games.

SDSU will enter next week's Mountain West Conference tournament as the number-four seed by virtue of the fourth-place finish in the final league standings. SDSU will meet UNLV in the first round of the tourney on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7:00 p.m. in Peterson Gym. The Rebels finished in a three-way tied for fifth with Air Force and Wyoming, but won the tiebreaker among the three schools to claim the fifth seed.
