This Week
After San Diego State had its first scheduled home meet of the year postponed due to the fires in San Diego county, it will open its home season with a dual meet against Mountain West Conference foe New Mexico on Saturday, Nov. 15. The first event is scheduled to get underway at noon at the Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center.
Coaching Staff
San Diego State head coach Deena Schmidt is in her 10th season as head coach of the Aztec swimming and diving program. The former Olympian, who won a gold as a member of the 400 medley relay team at the 1972 Olympics, is a 1988 graduate of San Diego State. Schmidt is assisted by Greg Hutt, also in his 10th season. Jim Wynne is in his second season as the Aztec diving coach. In addition, former Aztec all-conference swimmer Erin Kilpatrick will serve as a student assistant coach.
Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center
San Diego State will hold its home meets this season at the Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center. The facility opened in the summer of 2002 and is located at 6845 University Avenue. The Aztecs hold their daily practices at the City Heights Pool.
Last Week
SDSU began its Mountain West Conference season with dual meets at Utah and Brigham Young last weekend. On Friday (Nov. 7), the Aztecs fell to Utah by a score of 133-98. The following day, the defending league champion BYU Cougars were victorious, 173-123. San Diego State had a number of excellent individual performances in those two competitions, led by veteran Megan Storey and freshmen Caitlin Friedhoff and Stella Karoly.
Friedhoff Off To The Races
Freshman Caitlin Friedhoff, a prep All-American from Kent, Wash., won three of the four events in which she competed as an individual last weekend. At Utah, she took first in the 50 free (24.80) and second in the 100 free (53.46). At Brigham Young the next afternoon, she won both of those events, improving her times to 24.67 and 53.45 respectively.
What A Storey
Senior Megan Storey turned in another of the team's top performances in the meet at Brigham Young last weekend. She won the 1,000 freestyle (10:32.23), then came back four events later to capture first in the 200 butterfly (2:11.86). Storey also picked up a second-place finish in the 500 free (5:14.58) later in the day. One of the top distance swimmers in the conference, Storey has SDSU's top times in both the 1,000 and 1,650 free this fall, and ranks third and first in the MWC in those two events respectively
Ryan Swims Her Best
Senior freestylist Hannah Ryan set a new personal career best when she turned in a time of 25.66 in the 50 free at BYU last Saturday. She had already set a personal best in the 500 (5:04.06) at the UOP Invitational, the first meet of the season, an event she also won at the BYU meet.
Karoly Rolls On
Over the first two weeks of the season, freshman Stella Karoly has demonstrated her potential in the individual medley events. At Utah last Friday, she went 2:14.48 in the 200 IM to take second, then came back the next afternoon at Brigham Young to win that event in a time of 2:12.42. Karoly showed her versatility at the latter meet, taking second in the 200 butterfly with the team's second-best time of the season.
Sweeping Up
Jennifer Arrow captured her initial first-place finish of the season when she won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:08.11. Arrow led an Aztec sweep of that event as teammates Jill Karacozoff (1:09.22), Jennifer Graham (1:09.73) and Sarah Davis (1:12.00) finished right behind her. SDSU's other event sweep during the weekend came in the 200 butterfly at Utah where Storey, Karoly and Emily Schmied finished 1-2-3.
Diving In
The Aztec diving tandem of freshman Shannon Colvin and sophomore Lindsey Minnich went one-two in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions at Utah on Friday. At Brigham Young, it was Minnich who topped Colvin twice as they took third and fourth in the 1-meter, and fourth and fifth in the 3-meter events. Last weekend marked the debut of the SDSU divers who were competing for the first time this season.
The Schedule
For the second consecutive season, the Aztecs will face each of the other seven Mountain West Conference schools in dual meet action that began with away contests at Utah and Brigham Young last weekend. The Aztecs will host three MWC teams in dual meets at home, and conference action will be concluded by Dec. 6. SDSU will compete in the annual UCI Invitational in early January and conclude the regular season with four dual meets on the road before traveling to Oklahoma City for the annual conference championship meet in mid-February.
Looking Ahead
The Aztecs continue home league action when they host Wyoming and UNLV in a double dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 22. Start time for that meet is 12:00 p.m. at the Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center.
