LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The San Diego State women's soccer team lost to UNLV, 1-0, in a Mountain West Conference match Saturday night. The Aztecs (7-9-2, 2-3-1 MWC) out-shot the Rebels (8-9-2, 2-4-0 MWC), 17-14. The game marked the first Rebel victory over the Aztecs in seven all-time meetings.
The Aztecs had their shutout streak snapped at 299:54, but it marked the longest scoreless stretch for Aztec opponents since a 361:15 time period over five games in 1998.
Rebel defender Erin Egertson scored the lone goal of the game at the 82:24 mark with a blast into the top left corner of the net.
Forwards Kim Castellanos and Becky Prilaman and defender Amanda Swiader had three shots each to lead the SDSU offense.
The Aztecs will be the No. 4 seed at next week's MWC Tournament, hosted by the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. San Diego State once again faces UNLV, the No. 5 seed, in a MWC Quarterfinal game on Wednesday. The game time will be at 2 p.m. MST.
This marks the second consecutive season that UNLV and San Diego State have faced off in both the final regular season game and the first MWC Tournament game. Last season, the Aztecs defeated UNLV in the regular season finale, 2-1 in overtime, and then defeated the Rebels in the MWC Quarterfinals by an identical 2-1 score, that time in regulation time.
Other quarterfinal games on Wednesday will be: No. 2 Brigham Young (12-5-2, 4-2-0 MWC) vs. No. 7 Air Force (7-10-1, 1-5-0 MWC) at 9 a.m. MST and No. 3 Wyoming (10-8-0, 4-2-0 MWC) vs. No. 6 New Mexico (2-11-4, 1-4-1 MWC) at 11:30 a.m. MST.
Should the Aztecs defeat UNLV on Wednesday, they would play host Utah (15-2-0, 6-0-0 MWC), the No. 1 seed, in the semifinals at 2 p.m. MST on Thursday. The Utes are ranked in all four national polls, including No. 14 by both Soccer Buzz and Soccer America. The MWC Championship game is slated for a noon MST kickoff next Saturday.
