Men's Basketball Opens Season On Tuesday Against L.A. Stars

Nov. 3, 2003

SAN DIEGO - Steve Fisher will kick off his fifth season at the helm of the San Diego State men's basketball program on Tuesday, Nov. 4, as the Aztecs open up the 2003-04 season with an exhibition contest against the L.A. Stars at Cox Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

This marks the fourth straight season SDSU and the L.A. Stars have battled, with the Aztecs earning wins in each of the previous three-preseason contests. The game is the first of two exhibitions before the Aztecs open up regular season play at home against Long Beach State on Friday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m.

SDSU will also face Branch West in exhibition action. It will be the third time in four seasons that the Aztecs have faced Branch West, which is coached by Bob Gottlieb, the father of San Diego State assistant coach Gregg Gottlieb. The contest against Branch West is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7:05 p.m. at Cox Arena.

San Diego State posted a 16-14 record last season and advanced to postseason play for the second consecutive year. The Aztecs recorded the first Division I postseason victory in school history when SDSU defeated UC Santa Barbara in the opening round of the NIT. San Diego State returns eight letterwinners, including senior forward Aerick Sanders, who started all 30 games last season. Added to the mix this season will be the return of junior forward Chris Walton and the addition of junior guard Wesley Stokes, a transfer from Missouri.
