Aztec Crew Earns 6th Place Finish at Newport Fall Rowing Festival

Nov. 2, 2003

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The San Diego State women's eight boat finished sixth at the Newport Fall Rowing Festival Sunday morning, beating out UCLA and Loyola Marymount, boats that had recorded faster times than the Aztecs at last year's race. SDSU also beat out the other San Diego collegiate rowing programs, San Diego and UC San Diego.

The San Diego State "A" boat finished in 17:29, just beating out UCLA's "A" boat, which timed 17:30. USC's "A" boat won the race with a time of 16:18, while Sacramento State "A" finished 2nd (16:52), USC's "B" boat was 3rd (17:05), USC's "C" boat was 4th (17:12) and Sacramento State's "B" boat finished in 5th (17:21).

The Aztec "B" boat completed the race in 12th place, besting UCLA's "B" boat by 11 seconds (17:51 to 18:02), while the SDSU "C" boat was 19th (18:45). Twenty-five boats competed in the race.

The San Diego State novice boat had an impressive fourth-place showing out of 27 boats (17:59), finishing behind only UCLA (17:25), the Sacramento State "A" boat (17:39) and Orange Coast College (17:51). Teams the Aztecs beat included Stanford, Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine, USC and Long Beach State.

"It was our novice team's first race ever," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "They had a great attitude, were excited about the race and I'm pleased with their result. We're excited that they got to compete after only being able to practice on Friday and Saturday this week (due to the poor air quality in the San Diego area earlier in the week).

"Mary Creason did an excellent job coxing her first race (for the novice boat)," Zebroski added. "She remained upbeat and positive during the race and motivated the athletes to their fourth-place finish."

San Diego State wraps up their fall season with the San Diego Fall Classic next Sunday. The Aztecs' first event begins at 8 a.m.
