SAN DIEGO - The Aztecs will play in their fourth tournament of the fall this weekend at the Fresno State-Lexus Classic in Fresno, Calif. The tournament will be played on the par-72, 6,503 yard Belmont Country Club. The tournament field is made up of 15 schools, including four from the MWC. The Fresno Classic will be set up the same as last week's Husky Invitational where all teams will play six during the round and count five scores. In most tournaments, including the MWC and NCAA Championships, teams play five and count four scores.
* Six of the 15 teams in the field at the Fresno Classic are ranked in the top 65 in the country by Golfweek. BYU leads the pack at No. 34, while Texas Tech is ranked No. 39.
* Last season the Aztecs finished fourth out of 17 schools at the Fresno Classic as they fired a 13-over 877. Fresno State won the tournament at 870. Mark Warman led the Aztecs last season with a three-under 213, which placed him in fifth overall.
* Warman will again lead the six starters at this year's tournament. Cory Segall and Jamie Puterbaugh look to keep up their hot play after top 20 finishes last week. Andrew Scott, Linus Nilsson, and Aaron Choi finish out the starting lineup for this weekend's action.
Fantastic Frosh
* SDSU's freshmen duo of Cory Segall and Jamie Puterbaugh has earned national recognition. Their performance in the young season has the new Aztec class ranked 14th in the country among freshman classes at DI schools according to Golfstat.
* Segall is currently No. 90 in Golfweek's latest indivdaul rankings and No. 109 by Golfstat. Segall is averaging a team-best 71.5 strokes per round.
*Segall's second place finish at the Husky Invitational was the best finish for an Aztec freshman since Lars Johannson placed second at the Real Del Mar Classic in the fall of 1999.
* Jamie Puterbaugh earned his first top-20 finish with a five-over 221, which placed him in a tie for 13th at the Husky Invite.
Recapping The Husky Invitational
* San Diego State finished second at the Husky Invitational by shooting a final round 363 to finish with a total of 1108 (+28). The Aztecs entered the final day in fourth place but jumped two places with the second best round of the day at Gold Mountain's Olympic Course. The host school University of Washington won the tournament at 1087 (+7) but SDSU finished ahead of regional foes UCLA and California, who entered the tournament as two of the top teams in the country.
* Redshirt freshman Cory Segall led SDSU by tying for second at one-under 215. Segall posted his second straight round of one-under 71 to earn the runner-up finish. Segall's second place performance is the top finish for the Aztecs so far in the fall season. Cory has posted the team's top scoring average at 71.5 over six rounds.
* The Aztecs had four players finish in the top 25, with three being freshmen, and two players cracked the top ten. SDSU also posted three scores under par in the final round.
* Senior Mark Warman finished eighth after firing a two-under 70 for a 220 total. Warman shot 74-76 to open the tournament before shooting the fourth best score of the final day. It is the second time Warman has recorded a top-10 finish this year, as he also placed eighth at the season opening Mid Pines.
* Freshmen Jamie Puterbaugh and Aaron Goldberg also cracked the top 25 for SDSU. Puterbaugh shot 74-72-75 to place 13th with a total of 221. Goldberg fired a three-under 69 on Tuesday to finish in 23rd with a 224 total. Aaron was one of only four golfers in the tournament to break 70 in the three rounds.
By The Numbers
* The second place finish jumped the Aztecs to 47th in Golfweek's latest rankings with a rating of 72.42. Against the nation's 59th-ranked schedule, the Aztecs are 14-13-1 against Golfweek's Top 100, and 24-14-1 overall.
* According to Golfstat's 2003 Division I team rankings, the Aztecs are ranked 48th with a head-to-head record of 200-56.
