SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's soccer earned a 1-1 tie at Sacramento State on Friday in MPSF action. Sacramento State scored 13 minutes into the game and SDSU answered back with the tying goal at the 27:07 mark, but the defenses held strong in the second half and two overtime periods. Kevin Sapanli scored the Aztecs' lone goal off an assist from Heath Creager. SDSU is now 7-4-3 on the year and 1-0-2 in the MPSF.
The Aztecs gave up a score to the Hornets on an unassisted goal by Pat Powers. Sapanli tallied his third score over the past week, when he took a pass from Creager and rifled it past CSU-Sacramento goalkeeper Jeff Gibson. Sapanli earned MPSF Player of the Week honors last week for netting his first two goals of the season. SDSU dominated the action for the rest of the half outshooting the Hornets 11-6 in the period.
The Aztecs maintained a shot advantage in the second period at 8-5, but neither team was able to register the game winner. Senior goalkeeper Colin Hanke recorded five saves, which moves him into eighth place on SDSU's single season saves list with 67.
SDSU will play a key conference game against San Jose State, who entered the day 4-0 in MPSF play, on Sunday at 1 p.m.
