SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore Dita Hauerlandova, playing in her first match as an Aztec, defeated 57th-ranked Tiffany Eklov of Illinois on the first day of the 2003 SDSU Fall Classic on Friday.

Hauerlandova posted a 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 victory to advance to the semifinal round of Flight A Singles. She will be joined in the semifinal round of top-flight singles by teammate Katalina Romero. The Aztec senior made quick work of Melissa Cornett of Arkansas, 6-3, 6-2.

"It was a good day for the Aztecs," San Diego State head coach Peter Mattera said. "We picked up a ranked victory in singles and had a doubles team pick up its first win. We did a nice job of playing through the butterflies you get on the first day."

The 44th-ranked doubles team of Indra Erichsen and Katalina Romero gave the Aztecs a win in Flight A Doubles with a 9-7 win over Melissa Cornett and Anna Dybick of Arkansas. They will face the 31st-ranked doubles team of Jenny McGaffigan and Cynthia Goulet of Illinois at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The SDSU Fall Classic continues tomorrow at the SDSU Courts beginning at 9 a.m. PDT.
