Aztecs head back to the mountains * San Diego State's women's soccer team heads back to the mountains after a week at home, playing at Air Force (6-8-1, 0-3-0 MWC) at 4 p.m. MDT on Friday and at New Mexico (1-9-3, 0-3-0 MWC) at noon MST on Sunday. * The Aztecs (6-8-1, 1-2-0 MWC) finish out Mountain West Conference play with three teams who are 0-3-0 in MWC action: Air Force and New Mexico this weekend and UNLV the following weekend. * San Diego State has been eliminated from the race for the 2003 MWC regular season championship, but remain in the running for second place, which would earn SDSU a No. 2 seed at the MWC tournament and, if Utah finishes first, enable the Aztecs to host the 2004 MWC post-season tournament. Regular season champions host the next year's tournament, but teams are not allowed to host in consecutive years. Utah is hosting the 2003 tournament.

Aztecs earn win over Brigham Young, fall to Utah *Defender Noelle Jouglet scored her first goal of the year on Thursday to give San Diego State its first women's soccer victory over the Brigham Young Cougars since 1999, 1-0. Defender Shannon McBride earned her first Aztec point with a direct kick from 35 yards that went right to Jouglet six yards out, who headed it into the lower right corner of the net. BYU entered the match ranked No. 12 by Soccer America. * The Aztecs had lost five straight to the Cougars, including 5-1 and 9-2 setbacks last year. * San Diego State has more wins in MWC action against Brigham Young than all other MWC teams combined. SDSU is 2-3-0 against BYU in MWC action, while the rest of the league is 1-22-0 against the Cougars. Brigham Young has won all four regular season and postseason MWC championships. * SDSU also has more wins against BYU than any other team overall, with six. * San Diego State held Utah to 12 shots, its lowest total in MWC games this season, but two of them went in and the Utes defeated SDSU, 2-0, last Saturday. The Aztecs had eight shots of their own. Utah entered the game ranked No. 19 in the NSCAA/adidas national poll.

Jouglet named MWC Offensive Player of the Week * For her goal against Brigham Young, Noelle Jouglet became the first defender to be named MWC Offensive Player of the Week. She becomes the fourth Aztec in five weeks to be so honored. * The goal was Jouglet's first of the season and second in her three years at SDSU (she scored the game winner with 6:45 remaining in a 2-1 victory over Montana on Sept. 15, 2002).

Defenders hold powerful offenses in check * The San Diego State defense (Amanda Swiader, Alexis Solovij, Shannon McBride and Noelle Jouglet) held the powerful BYU offense to 10 shots, its second lowest output of the season (the Cougars had eight shots against No. 2 Florida on Sept. 26, a 3-2 overtime loss). The Aztecs also held Utah to 12 shots, its lowest total in MWC action this year and well below its MWC average of 20 shots entering the match.

Pearson earns another shutout * Goalkeeper Stephanie Pearson earned her fifth shutout of the season against BYU. She had four saves, including a kick save of a shot from BYU midfielder Aleisha Rose at the 33:54 mark. Pearson also got to a rolling ball in the box at the 43:05 mark just before a Cougar had a chance to get a shot off.

Scouting Air Force * The Falcons are 6-8-1, 0-3-0 in MWC play. * Forward Jennifer Rowland leads Air Force with four goals and one assist. Midfielders Cookie Day, Meredith Benson and Leigh-Anne Withers have two goals each. * Air Force started the season 3-0-0, its best start in the program's 11-year history, but has struggled to find wins since then, going 3-8-1. * San Diego State holds a 5-1-0 record against the Falcons, winning at home last season, 1-0, on an overtime goal 13 seconds into the extra session by forward Kim Castellanos.

Scouting New Mexico * The Lobos are 1-9-3, 0-3-0 in MWC play and host UNLV Friday night. Sunday's match-up with the Aztecs will be New Mexico's final home game of the season. * The Lobos are well-supported by the Albuquerque community, averaging 1,318 a game. UNM averaged 1,080 last season, ranking them 10th in the country. * The Lobos have been out-scored 19-4 this season with forward Kristine Sweat and midfielder Rachael Addison scoring two goals each. * SDSU holds a 5-3-1 all-time series advantage over the Lobos, but New Mexico has won the past two meetings. Last season, UNM pulled off a rare victory for a visiting MWC team to the SDSU Sports Deck, defeating the Aztecs, 1-0. SDSU is 9-3-0 all-time in MWC matches played at the four-year old facility.
