Schauermann Leads Volleyball To Win Over Air Force

Oct. 11, 2003

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State picked up its third win of the week, defeating Air Force, 3-0 (30-22, 30-22, 30-27), Saturday night in Peterson Gym. Along the way, SDSU's Megan Schauermann established a new school record for hitting percentage in a three-game match as she and three teammates finished the night in double figures in kills.

With the win, the Aztecs improved to 12-8 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons, meanwhile, saw their record drop to 10-8 (1-4 MWC).

Schauermann, a senior middle blocker from Vancouver, Wash, hit .867 over the three games with 13 kills on 15 attacks and no errors. She broke the old mark of .833 (10-0-12) set by Martina Vitkova against William and Mary on Oct. 9, 1995.

Aspen McPartland continued her excellent play, recording a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs while Kara Moriarty contributed 12 kills and a .455 attack percentage. Robyn Gregg also chipped in with 12 digs.

Air Force's Delvane Diaz led all players with 17 kills and the Falcons also got 11 from Molly White.

Game one was one of those in which the final score belied the closeness of the contest. After SDSU ran out to an 8-2 lead, Air Force fought back to knot the score at 10-10. From there, the teams traded points until the Falcons to a two-point lead at 19-17.

After a timeout, the Aztecs won six of the next seven points, closing out the eight-point win with the help of two kills and two service aces by Zlatina Anguelova. Air Force's Diaz led all players with seven kills while Schauermann had six for SDSU.

In the second game, the Aztecs score four straight points midway through the contest to take a 16-12 and pulled away for the eight-point victory. McPartland, who finished game two with seven kills, led the way down the stretch, accounting for three of SDSU's final six points.

Game three was another evenly contested affair that saw the score tied as late as 21-21. A Falcon attack error plus consecutive kills by Moriarty, McPartland and Gregg gave the home side a 25-21 lead. The Aztecs closed out the match on a kill by Schauermann.

San Diego State returns to road action next week when it travels to Provo, Utah, to take on Brigham Young on Friday, Oct. 17, at 7:00 p.m. (MDT)
