SAN DIEGO - San Diego State fell to USD 3-0 in an intercity matchup on Saturday at the SDSU Sports Deck. USD won its sixth straight game to improve to 7-2-2 and snapped the Aztecs five-game winning streak at home. The two teams battle to a 0-0 tie at the half but the Toreros controlled the action in the second period. It was also the fourth straight win for USD in the series between the rivals. SDSU is now 6-4-1 on the year.
The Aztecs earned the first quality scoring chance in the opening minutes of the game when Heath Creager got behind the defense but was unable to put away a one-on-one opportunity. The two teams both recorded five shots in the first half. However, SDSU held a decisive edge in quality scoring opportunities, but could not find the net.
The second half was controlled by the Toreros. USD's first goal came at the 59:02 mark as a Sy Reeves wove through the Aztec defense and took a shot that SDSU keeper Colin Hanke deflected. The rebound ended up right at the foot of Matt McCausland who scored his third goal of the season.
McCausland returned the favor 15 minutes later when he crossed to an open Sy Reeves on the right side for the second score of the game. USD added a late tally at the 82:34 mark for the final margin, as Michael Caso beat SDSU keeper Tally Hall for the score. USD ended up with a 17-10 shot advantage.
Hanke tied a season high with eight saves, while USD posted their sixth shutout of the season.
SDSU will open up MPSF action next Monday, Oct. 20, at UNLV.
