Volleyball Defeats New Mexico In SDSU's 1000th Match

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State celebrated the 1000th match in school history with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-25, 30-22) victory over New Mexico in Peterson Gym Friday night. The victory allowed SDSU to even its Mountain West Conference record at 2-2 while improving to 11-8 overall. The loss dropped New Mexico to 3-13 on the year and 0-4 in league play.

Aspen McPartland led SDSU with 17 kills and hit .577 over the three games. She also had seven digs and a pair of blocks on the night while Megan Schauermann led all blockers with five.

Aztec senior Zlatina Anguelova finished the match with 11 kills, and in the process recorded her 1000th career kill. She joins McPartland, who achieved the same milestone earlier this season.

Anna Reines and Georgia Whitson had 10 and nine kills respectively to lead UNM, which hit just .146 for the match compared to .336 for San Diego State.

The Aztecs came out quickly in game one, hitting .424 while Lobos to a .195 attack percentage. Anguelova and McPartland paced SDSU with five kills apiece while Reines and Whitson had four each for UNM. Schauermann contributed three blocks as the Aztecs totaled three team blocks to 1.5 for the Lobos.

In game two, New Mexico took control early, running out to a 7-4 lead. SDSU fought back to knot the score at 15, then ran off six straight points paced by three kills from Schauermann. Although the visitors came back to get within two points at 25-23, the Aztecs pulled away on a pair of kills by McPartland to wrap up the game.

The third game was close in the early stages as the teams fought back and forth to an 11-11 tie. The Aztecs then scored five consecutive points and never looked back en route to the 12-point win. Anguelova had a game-high six kills while McPartland contributed five. Anna Reines led New Mexico, tallying five of her team-high 10 kills in the final game.

San Diego State is back in action on Saturday (Oct. 11) when it hosts Air Force in a Mountain West Conference match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
