COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado College Tigers (5-6-1) came back to defeat the San Diego State Aztecs (5-6-1) in a women's soccer game Friday afternoon. The evenly-matched game saw both teams record 11 shots. Forward Courtney Burns and defender Amanda Swiader each scored a goal for the Aztecs.
Tiger midfielder Kelly Sweitzer scored the first goal of the game at the 6:49 mark and Colorado College took a 7-2 shot advantage into the half.
San Diego State turned on its offensive strength in the second half, out-shooting CC, 7-3. Burns scored at the 53:20 mark to tie the game 1-1 when she pounced on a deflection off a Colorado College defender and drove it into the net. Swiader earned the assist.
Swiader converted a penalty kick at the 70:24 mark, but the 2-1 Aztec lead would not hold.
Tiger midfielder Brittany Kernan scored the tying goal at the 83:29 mark when she took a shot from 53 yards out near the right sideline that took a high bounce over Aztec goalkeeper Stephanie Pearson and into the net.
SDSU took both shots of the first overtime session, but did not score. Colorado College capitalized on the lone shot of the second overtime session. Midfielder Kelly Sweitzer scored her second goal of the match at the 104:19 mark from the top of the box after dribbling past two defenders to give CC their third overtime victory of the season in four extra-session matches.
San Diego State has now played in three consecutive overtime matches, the first time that's occurred since the 1992 team played Cal Poly SLO (a 2-1 win), Cal State Dominguez Hills (a 2-1 loss) and UC Irvine (a 0-0 tie) to overtime in consecutive games. This year's team tied Arizona State 1-1 last Friday and defeated San Francisco 1-0 on Sunday. Combined with SDSU's OT game with UCF on Sept. 12 (a 1-0 loss), the team has played four overtime games this season, tied with the 1998 team for most in school history.
The Aztecs open Mountain West Conference play at 1 p.m. MDT on Sunday at Wyoming (1-0 MWC, 6-6).
