SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's golf team will continue the 2003 fall season at the 36-hole Heather Farr Memorial Invitational on Monday and Tuesday with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m. Monday and a shotgun start begininng at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Hosted by the University of Colorado, the 17-team field features seven teams ranked in Golfweek's top 100, with San Diego State leading the pack at No. 51. There is a large group following closely behind the Aztecs as Denver, Portland State, UC Irvine, Colorado, and Colorado State are all ranked in the top 77.
Recapping the Dick McGuire
* SDSU placed 11th out of 17 teams in a very strong field at the Dick McGuire Invitational, as 16 of the teams were ranked in Golfweek's Top 100. The Aztecs opened with a round of 314, which put them in 14th place. The Aztecs improved on on Friday with a 306 but it was not enough to move up on the leaderboard as they remained in 14th entering the final round. On Saturday, under grueling conditions, the Aztecs grinded out a 310, the fifth best round of the day, to jump three spots to 11th place and only five strokes out of sixth. Every one of the 10 teams that placed ahead of the Aztecs are ranked in Golfweek's Top 50 this week. SDSU improved 51 strokes over last season's 18th place performance at the tournament. * Shayna Miyajima led the Aztecs with an 11th place overall finish at four-over 223. Miyajima was solid each round of the tournament with scores of 75-74-74 at the par 73 course. * Sandy Kim was a little more up and down for SDSU but still placed a very respectable 35th at +13, 232. Kim shot the low round for SDSU when she fired a one-under 72 on Friday. The score ties Kim's career best round in relation to par while at SDSU. Sandy twice shot one-under scores of 71 last season. * Jenna Wilson posted SDSU's third best score at 235 (+15) and placed 42nd in her first tournament as an Aztec. Heather MacRae followed at 243 (+23), while Jamie Oliver and Megan Maulhaupt both fired 244 (+25), with Maulhaupt playing as an individual.
The Individual Spotlight
* The Heather Farr presents an opportunity for the Aztecs' senior duo of Shayna Miyajima and Sandy Kim to shine as they enter the tournament as two of the top four ranked individuals. Miyajima leads the field as the 49th ranked golfer in the country and is the only one in the tournament in the top 100. Sandy Kim is the fourth ranked individual in the field at No. 170 in the country. A couple other golfers to watch are Angela Won of UC Irvine, Kate Waggoner from Denver, and Hannah Hoch from host Colorado.
By The Numbers
* After a week off, the Aztecs jumped to 51st in Golfweek's latest rankings with a rating of 76.88. Against the nation's 29th-ranked schedule, the Aztecs are 5-10 against Golfweek's Top 100, and 6-10 overall. Every team that finished ahead of Aztecsat the Dick McGuire are ranked in the Golfweek's Top 50. * According to Golfstat's Division I team rankings, SDSU is the country's 52nd-ranked team with a division record of 152-50. * Shayna Miyajima is currently ranked 28th by Golfstat and 49th by Golfweek as an individual.
Meet The Aztecs
* The 2003-04 San Diego State women's golf team returns its top two players from a year ago to a roster that is loaded with potential. * The Aztecs boast the talented senior duo of Sandy Kim and Shayna Miyajima who both finished in the top 10 on the MWC leaderboard in stroke average. SDSU's season-opening lineup at the Dick McGuire Invitational will also feature three newcomers. Heather MacRae is a junior transfer from McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas, where she won the 2003 individual junior college national championship. She also led McLennan to the team title in 2002, when she finished third as an individual. Megan Mulhaupt is a transfer from Indiana University, where she spent two seasons. The final starter this week is freshman Jenna Wilson from Scotland where she won the Under-21 Scottish National Championship over the summer.
Head Coach Felicia Brown
* Head coach Felicia Brown is in her second season at the helm of the SDSU golf program after serving as assistant coach in 2001-02. A native San Diegan, Brown prepped locally at San Marcos HS before playing collegiately at Arizona. She boasts professional playing experience on the Players' West Golf Tour and has had experience with the LPGA teaching division.
