TUCSON, Ariz. - In its second match of the day, San Diego State dropped a tight 3-2 decision (23-30, 33-31, 30-27, 25-30, 13-15) to 20th-ranked Santa Clara at the Wildcat Invitational at the University of Arizona. The Aztecs, who were called upon to play back-to-back matches on Friday, saw their record fall to 4-3. The Broncos improved to 4-3 on the year.
Four Aztecs finished in double figures in kills, led by 17 from Aspen McPartland. The senior from San Diego (Grossmont HS) also finished the match with 16 digs and 13 blocks to record the first triple-double of her SDSU career.
Zlatina Anguelova (16), Kara Moriarty (14) and Megan Schauermann (13) also hit double figure in kills. McPartland (.333) and Schauermann (.323) led the Aztecs in hitting, but the team hit just .210 overall over the five games.
San Diego was again solid at the net, recording a season-high 22.5 team blocks, the fourth straight game they have out-blocked the opposition. In addition to McPartland's contribution, Schauermann had eight blocks while Sara Engstrom chipped in with seven.
Santa Clara, meanwhile, also had four players reach double figures in kills, paced by Becky Potter with a match-high 26. Broncos Becky Biniek and Cassie Perret had 16 kills apiece in the winning cause.
San Diego State continues tournament action on the road next week when they travel to Kansas to compete in the Shocker Invitational at Wichita State Sept. 13-14. In addition to the host team, the Aztecs will also face North Texas, Nicholls State and Oral Roberts.
