TUCSON, Ariz. - San Diego saw its four-match win streak ended Friday afternoon as it fell to the Miami Hurricanes, 3-1 (30-21, 23-30, 21-30, 23-30), at the Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. Miami, which received votes in this week's AVCA top 25 poll, remained perfect on the year at 5-0 while SDSU saw its record fall to 4-2.
It was a tough day for the SDSU offense, which turned in a .112 hitting percentage for the match. Aspen McPartland and Zlatina Anguelova led the Aztecs in kills with 14 and 11 respectively. McPartland, who finished with a .334 hitting percentage, was the lone Aztec to hit over the .200 mark over the four games.
Despite the loss, SDSU turned in another good performance at the net, out-blocking their opponent for the third straight match. Senior Melissa Cansdale led the Aztecs with 10 block assists, a career best that doubled her previous match high of five against Alabama-Birmingham last season. Her total of 11 blocks vs. the Hurricanes was also a personal best for the fifth-year senior from Boulder City, Nev.
Miami finished the match with four players in double figures in kills, led by 25 from Valeria Tipiana and 14 by Leyre Santaella Sante. The Hurricanes register 73 team kills compared to 46 by the Aztecs and also led the match in digs, 68-36, over SDSU.
San Diego State concludes play in the Wildcat Classic later today when they take on 20th-ranked Santa Clara at 5:00 p.m. at University of Arizona's McKale Center.
