Volleyball Shuts Down Rhode Island At Wildcat Classic

Sept. 4, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz. - San Diego State won its fourth consecutive match and second of the day as it defeated Rhode Island, 3-0 (30-25, 30-26, 30-16), at the Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic at the University of Arizona's McKale Center Thursday evening. The win improved the Aztecs to 4-1 on the year while the Rams fell to 1-5.

Kara Moriarty led SDSU in kills for the third straight match, this time totaling 16 to go along with seven digs and a .344 hitting percentage. Teammate Zlatina Anguelova chipped in with 10 kills of her own, hitting .318 on the night.

The Aztecs also received eight kills and a match-high 11 digs from senior Aspen McPartland, who hit .700, plus eight kills from middle blocker Megan Schauermann.

Amy Kauppila and Atlee Hubbard led the Rams with 10 kills apiece while Laura Murgo had a team-high 10 digs. However, it wasn't enough to stop the Aztec attack.

After two close games, SDSU played its best game of the day to wrap up the match, hitting .483 and committing just one attack error.

The match was the third straight in which San Diego State hit well over .300 as a team, turning in a .340 attack percentage against URI. The Rams, meanwhile, were held to a .128 hitting mark as the Aztecs recorded more kills, digs and blocks over the three games.

San Diego State continues play in the Wildcat Classic on Thursday when it face the undefeated (4-0) Miami Hurricanes at 12:30 p.m. The Aztecs will then turn around and face 20th-ranked Santa Clara at 5:00 p.m.
