Volleyball Defeats 10th-Ranked Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - San Diego State opened play in the Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic Thursday morning by defeating the host team, Arizona, 3-1 (31-33, 30-24, 30-23, 30-27), at McKale Center in Tucson. It was the Aztecs' third consecutive win as they improved to 3-1 on the season. Arizona, ranked 10th in the nation in this week's AVCA poll, fell to 2-2 on the year.

For the second straight game, junior Kara Moriarty matched her career best with 17 kills to lead SDSU. She added eight digs and a pair of block assists while hitting .371 for the match.

In addition to Moriarty, Megan Schauermann (12) and Zlatina Anguelova (10) finished the game in double figures in kills for the Aztecs who hit .339. Schauermann whose kill total was one shy of her Aztec career high, hit .381 for the match while Anguelova registered a .308 attack percentage.

Senior Robyn Gregg had a match-high 11 digs and recorded a pair of service aces to move her into ninth place in the SDSU career list with 143.

Also contributing to the Aztec victory were seniors Melissa Cansdale, who was error-free in eight attempts with five kills for a .625 hitting mark, and setter Sara Engstrom, who had a career-best five block assists in the winning cause.

Arizona's Kim Glass, the 2002 AVCA Freshman of the Year and a second-team All-American last season, led all players with 19 kills, but the Aztecs were able to keep her in check as she finished the match with a hitting percentage of just .094.

In game one, SDSU got off to a slow start, but despite hitting just .118, lost the first contest by just two points at 33-31. However, the team then picked up the offensive tempo and hit .419 over the next three games. Defensively, the Aztecs recorded 10 team blocks compared to six by the Wildcats.

San Diego State continues play in Tucson this evening Thursday, Sept. 4) when it takes on Rhode Island at 5:00 p.m.
