Sept. 4, 2003

Final Stats

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Forward Kim Castellanos scored both goals for the San Diego State women's soccer team as the Aztecs defeated visiting Long Beach State, 2-0, on Thursday afternoon. San Diego State improved to 1-2, while the 49ers fell to 0-3.

Before Castellanos scored on a penalty kick at the 26:49 mark, both teams had taken two shots. Following her penalty kick, San Diego State took control of the ball, out-shooting Long Beach State 9-1 the rest of the match.

The penalty kick was awarded after Aztec forward Courtney Burns was fouled in the penalty area. Castellanos' conversion was her second make in as many games and third in five games dating back to last season. She converted penalty kicks against UC Irvine on Monday and in last years Mountain West Conference quarterfinal victory over UNLV.

Castellanos added her third goal of the season at the 61:49 mark. Forward JoBette Nabarro contributed the assist with a well-placed side pass to Castellanos on the left side of the penalty area. Castellanos took the ball and ran with it toward the right side and shot it past 49er goalkeeper Tara Gotthardt and into the lower left corner of the net from eight yards out.

Castellanos nearly scored a goal at the 10:37 mark when she shot a ball off the right crossbar.

Castellanos recorded six shots on the game while forward Lisette Martinez had two. Four other Aztecs had one shot each.

San Diego State's defense turned in an outstanding performance, not allowing Long Beach State to record a shot on goal.

"The intensity was there from the first whistle," head coach Chuck Clegg said of the Aztecs. "The depth of our bench was the key to the win today."

Long Beach State's two best scoring chances came following Castellanos' shot off the bar and before her penalty kick. Forward Abie Curry shot the ball just to the right of the net at the 10:55 mark. At the 18:11 mark, forward Kristin Travis shot the ball just over Aztec goalkeeper Stephanie Pearson's hands and to the right of the net.

The Aztecs return to action in the Kansas Tournament, facing the University of Central Florida at 2:30 p.m. CDT on Sept. 12. The Golden Knights are 2-0 and host Miami on Friday and play at Florida on Sunday prior to meeting the Aztecs in Lawrence, Kan.
