SAN DIEGO - San Diego State defeated the University of Albany 2-0 on Sunday afternoon to improve to 6-1-1 on the season. It was the Aztecs third straight victory and also improves their unbeaten streak to five games. SDSU also remains a perfect 5-0 in home contests this year. SDSU is off to their best start since 1991 when they started the year 7-0.
For the first time this season the Aztecs tallied a goal in the first half when Raul Bautista used a header from a corner kick to score in the 29th minute, which would end up being the game winner. Kenny Fechner placed a perfect ball off the corner kick to notch his fifth assist of the season. It was the first goal of the season for Bautista.
The Aztecs used the momentum to tally another goal just two minutes later. Fechner again started the play as he led Dione Scott into the right corner. Scott got behind the defensemen and crossed a ball right along the goal line to the foot of Heath Creager in front the net for the easy put in. It was the team leading fourth goal of the season for Creager, and Scott's second assist.
Colin Hanke held Albany scoreless for the first 70 minutes, and freshman Tally Hall entered to complete the shutout in net. It is the second combined shutout of the season for the Aztec goalkeepers.
The Aztecs will travel to the New Jersey next weekend where they will play #10 Rutgers and #6 St. John's. SDSU next home contest will be against cross town rival University of San Diego on Saturday, October 11th at 2:00 pm.
