CEDAR CITY, Utah - San Diego State shutout Southern Utah, 3-0, in a women's soccer game on Friday. The Aztecs posted their second shutout of the season and improve to 2-4-0 with the win. Southern Utah falls to 0-8-0.

The Aztecs got on the board at the 18:40 mark of the first half, thanks to two one-touch passes from forwards Gina Salinas and Lisette Martinez that set up a goal by defender Ashley Cooper from 12 yards out.

Minutes before haltime, forward Holly Huppert guided the ball just over the goal line for SDSU's second goal. Martinez was credited with the assist.

Goalkeeper Stephanie Pearson stopped a 15-yard shot from Thunderbird midfielder Lauren Lewis on a diving save with just over 20 minutes remaining in the match. Pearson finished with three saves to go along with her second shutout of the season.

"Our defense played well," head coach Chuck Clegg said. "Southern Utah only had one real chance at goal."

Salinas scored the third and final goal for the Aztecs with a shot off the right wing with just 13 seconds remaining in the match. Midfielder Amanda McKay earned her first point as an Aztec with the assist. She had played the previous two years at San Jose State.

SDSU out-shot SUU 22-5 for the match, including 12-3 on goal.

"We put a lot of pressure on Southern Utah and created a lot of opportunities," Clegg said. "But we have to have more quality crosses to set up scores."

The Aztecs remain in Cedar City, Utah, to play Weber State (1-3-2) at 3 p.m. MDT on Saturday.
