LAS VEGAS - San Diego State opened the UNLV Classic with a 1-1 tie against Bowling Green on Friday despite having seven more shots on goal. The Falcons scored first with a goal in the 27th minute, but the Aztecs answered with a goal just 45 seconds into the second period as Dione Scott scored to tie the game at 1-1. SDSU dominated the rest of play out shooting BGSU 18-7 during the second half and two overtime periods but could not notch the game winner. SDSU is now 3-1-1 on the season while BGSU is 2-1-2.
The Aztecs fell behind for the fourth time this season when BGSU netted their goal in the first half. SDSU has yet to notch a point in the first half of action. However, it was the third time this year the Aztecs have fought their way back into the game. It is the second straight game Scott has scored and now leads the Aztecs with five points on the season and is tied for the team lead with two goals. The goal came unassisted from the right side of the box just after the start of the half. SDSU posted 13 more shots in the final period compared to only four by the Falcons.
Colin Hanke allowed only one goal in 110 minutes and made eight saves in net for SDSU. Kevin Sapanli, a 2001 All-MPSF performer for SDSU, saw his first action for the Aztecs in over a year and tallied three shots.
The Aztecs will play Drake on Sunday at 2:00 pm in Las Vegas to wrap up the tournament.
