SAN DIEGO - San Diego State scored two goals in the last 10 minutes of the game to earn a 2-1 come from behind victory over UC Riverside on Saturday at the SDSU Sports Deck. Dione Scott tied the game with just over nine minutes remaining and Nick Clemens scored the game winner less than two minutes later. SDSU improves to 3-1 on the season, while UC Riverside falls to 1-3.
The Aztecs dominated the first five minutes as they controlled the action in the UCR side of the field. However, it was the Highlanders who got the first break of the game as Scott Barnett slipped through the SDSU defense to punch one into the right side of the net at the 7:06 mark. The score remained at 1-0 entering halftime despite the fact that SDSU out shot UCR 10-5 in the first half, and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The beginning of the second half was contested mostly in the midfield as neither team registered a shot until 15 minutes into the period. The Aztecs turned up the pressure as time wound down. The first Aztec goal came off a throw in by Kenny Fechner down in the Highlander zone. Matt Couch got a head on it and sent it to Jordan McKee. McKee flipped the ball to the feet of Scott who sent a rocket past the UCR goalkeeper from the right side. Couch and McKee both earned assists on the play.
SDSU was not done their however, as they used the momentum to score only 92 seconds later. Scott got the play started as he sent the ball back to Blake Perry, who crossed to Clemens in the center of the field for the goal from just outside the box. The Aztecs then held off a flurry by the Highlanders to preserve the win and remain perfect at home.
The Aztecs tallied 18 shots for the game compared to only nine from UCR. Colin Hanke posted four saves in goal to earn the victory.
The Aztecs travel to the UNLV Tournament for two matches this weekend, with the first on Friday against Bowling Green at 5:00 p.m.
