Wichita, Kan. - San Diego State saw its three-match win streak come to an end as it fell to Wichita State, 3-1 (29-31, 23-30, 31-29, 22-30), in the championship game of the Green Mill Restaurant Volleyball Classic at WSU's Charles Koch Arena. The win was the fifth in a row for the Shockers, who improved to 7-3 on the year. SDSU, meanwhile, saw its record fall to 7-4.
San Diego State was led by senior Aspen McPartland, who recorded17 kills and 10 digs along with five blocks. Melissa Cansdale chipped in with10 kills and also had five blocks on the night. McPartland and Cansdale hit .353 and .348 respectively.
Wichita State's Cori Meyer was the only Shocker in double figures in kills with 10, and competed the double-double with 10 digs.
Neither team stood out offensively, with Wichita State compiling a .174 team attack percentage compared to .115 for the Aztecs. SDSU was below the .100 mark in each of the first two games of the match as they fell behind 2-0 before rallying to win game three.
For the first time in five matches, San Diego State found itself out-blocked with the Shockers winning the battle at the net 16.5-10. After recording 22 blocks in the first three matches of the tourney, Megan Schauermann was held to just three in the title match.
Aspen McPartland and Zlatina Anguelova were named to the all-tournament team. McPartland hit .357 over the four matches while averaging 3.87 kills, 2.57 digs and 1.27 blocks per game. Anguelova finished the tournament with 2.80 kpg and 2.47 dpg averages.
Up next for the Aztecs is a match against cross-town rival University of San Diego on Tuesday (Sept. 16) at 7:00 p.m. in Peterson Gym.
